Welcome to Journalism and Honors Journalism

CLASS DESCRIPTION:

This course is an introduction to the world of fact-finding, reporting, writing, designing, and meeting a deadline that make up the very fabric of journalism. Students in this course will have the opportunity to acquire an understanding in all phases of publication work. In addition, students will acquire an understanding and appreciation of the different parts of newspapers, yearbooks, and broadcasts. Ethics in journalism, journalistic history, the importance of deadlines and role of the press in a democratic society will be stressed. In addition, honors students will publish one issue of The Tower newspaper.

MY EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY:

I believe presentation and approach have a direct effect on student motivation and achievement. That’s probably why I still have nightmares about my college economics classes. Documentaries on watching paint dry were more compelling. There’s nothing fun about listening to a lecture.

Therefore, my class is built around interaction and activity. The subject material and structure provides you a “hands-on” learning laboratory. It will be challenging – especially compared to simple rote memorization – but I assure you it will be more interesting and rewarding.

I am also a strong proponent of proactive communication. If you fall behind, or miss assignments, I will contact your parent(s)/guardian(s). This will be done before grades are sent out, and maintained as long as is necessary. This is done to ensure your success.

COURSE OBJECTIVES:

In addition to achieving both district and state of Michigan benchmarks, you will be able to:

  • Understand and explain what separates news from “something that happened.”

  • Conduct an interview.

  • Research and investigate a news / feature story.

  • Write an editorial.

  • Copy edit and create headlines.

  • Design a page for publication.

  • Read on camera (we’ll record it on tape).

  • Scrutinize web sources.

  • Tell your friends and family why maintaining a free press is essential to Democracy.
